Kairouan: The Fourth Holy City

Kairouan is the fourth holiest city in Islam (after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem) and Tunisia's most important religious center. Founded in 670 AD, it was the first Muslim city in North Africa and served as the capital of the Islamic Maghreb for over 400 years. The entire medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Must-see sites

1. Great Mosque of Kairouan (Mosque of Uqba)

The oldest mosque in North Africa, founded in 670 AD. Its massive courtyard, forest of marble columns, and soaring minaret make it one of the most important Islamic buildings in the world. Non-Muslims can visit the courtyard and exterior.

2. Medina of Kairouan

Smaller and less touristy than Tunis or Sousse, Kairouan's medina is authentic and atmospheric. Narrow streets, carved doors, and the smell of fresh bread from bakeries.

3. Carpet workshops

Kairouan is Tunisia's carpet capital. Visit the workshops where traditional knotted carpets are still made by hand on wooden looms. You can watch the entire process from wool dying to finished carpet.

4. Makroudh pastries

Kairouan is famous for makroudh — diamond-shaped semolina pastries filled with dates and dipped in honey. Buy them fresh from bakeries in the medina (they make the best in Tunisia).
